Hi! I'm Liem! I will tell you about an unwanted encounter with driver ants. On Wednesday the 2nd of November, Every student and a few teachers were in for a big surprise! Two kids actually had the ants on them! One boy had an ant attached to him because the ant had pierced his sock and got stuck! Their nest was at the field's center and the ants were crawling around like crazy! Aled D. Saw some in the trash can as well. Their nest was found to be UNDERground. The situation got so extreme that the field was closed from 12:40 Wednesday to 12:20 Thursday. An exterminator arrived Wednesday afternoon and destroyed both the ants and the nest. ISS has had one pest situation to another starting in January! First snakes, then wasps, then bees, then MORE wasps, Then nothing and now this?? When will it end??? Besides the heat, humidity and the weather, you ALSO have to get used to the pests in Singapore. Just another day in the tropics!

What a lovely fun-filled day celebrating our internationalism at ISS. 50 countries were represented today, showcasing ISS's diverse student body. 5.3 really enjoyed our activities and we especially enjoyed the food!! We wish international day could be every Friday. Have a safe and happy break 5.3! 5.3 went into the design lab yet again. This time we omitted the marshmallows (Mr. Gallagher was happy), and investigated a transformation of energy using materials that could make and propel a cardboard car. After using our skills to make the car work, we then used the scientific method to formulate an experiment. Great fun and a lot of learning was had by all!
Congratulations to 5.3 for showing their inquiry skills this week. They investigated types of energy and sythesised the information to create an informational poster for their classmates to learn from. Well done!
5.3 used the scientific method to ask a question about mechanical energy. If we made a trebuchet and launched three different items, which would go furthest? We formulated our hypothesis, gathered our materials, and decided on what would make a fair test. Once prepared we were off to the design lab! We had 7 sticks, four marshmallows (much to Mr. Gallagher's dismay), two elastic bands, and a small amount of tape to work with. Before doing our experiment we needed to design a trebuchet that would launch items using mechanical energy. This proved quite difficult for some, but we all remembered our golden rule of triangles being a strong building shape. Hope you enjoy our pictures! Mrs Jasinska stepped outside of the room and we cooperated together to create a scene that was not showing caring actions and a scene that showed caring actions.
Hi! My name is Chloe. Last Friday Grade 5 went to the Science Centre to learn more about energy. We first went to the Kinetic Garden where we got to play with objects that had kinetic energy. Some of us noticed that there was other types of energies that was being used in some of those objects, like sound energy and gravitational potential energy. After the Kinetic Garden we went to a workshop to learn more about energy and how it is used. We all got in groups and received a worksheet with instructions and questions to the experiments and questions about energy. Multiple of the experiments we did involved marbles because marbles have a lot of both potential and kinetic energy in them and also ramps to place the marble. We placed different marbles on the ramp in different positions (one large marble would be in the middle of the ramp while the other marble would be placed on the slope part of the ramp). After playing with the marbles and ramps, we got to make our own marble machine. Everyone got a board with holes in it and a box of materials. The materials in the box included: wooden sticks (chopsticks), clips, slopes, cups, a funnel and a bell. We had to use these materials to make the marble go as slow as possible. The hardest part of this task was that we had to finish this in only 25 minutes! After the workshop we got to look around the front of the centre, which had cool optical illusions and a HUGE marble machine. Most of Grade 5 and I looked at the marble machine a lot because we thought that it was really cool to see the marble go around the machine without any problems. My favorite part about the Science Centre was the Kinetic Garden because there were so many fun materials to play with. My personal favorite object was the sound dishes because you could hear things clearly through the sound dishes no matter how far apart the 2 dishes were. Overall, the Science Centre was really fun and we learnt a lot about energy! Hi my name is Keita. For our new Unit of Inquiry we will be focusing on How the World Works. To help us understand the scientific method we are using it for an experiment. We did an egg experiment using science yesterday, because we want to see how eggs will react to sitting in different liquids for a prolonged period of time.We used 200 ml of coca cola, 200 ml of vinegar, 200ml of coffee and 3 cups to hold the eggs in. One egg is left out as the control egg. We will observe the eggs for a week to see how they react. Our hypothesis is a guess to what may happen to the eggs in different liquid. I thought coffee will make the egg black, vinegar will make the egg slime, and coca cola will melt the egg. I am excited to see what will happen. |
